Taking the Air
In my most recent Guest Blog for the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, I was able to highlight the public health catastrophe caused by the asbestos pollution generated by the operations at the Eternit asbestos-cement factory. "Taking the Air," contrasts the healthy British leisure activity of breathing in ozone-laden sea air with the harmful consequences of breathing the air in Casale Monferrato and other Italian towns blighted by Eternit.
The dire consequences of living in…

Spies in our midst!
The English language briefings uploaded to the Asbestos in the Dock website have proved immensely helpful to non-Italian speakers. I was particularly interested to read that Journalist Cristina Bruno was recently struck off the national register of journalists for unethical behaviour following revelations made about her activities as a paid informer for the public relations company hired by the Eternit Group.
Bruno infiltrated AFEVA, the Italian asbestos victims’ group…

February 14: Valentine's Day in a Turin Courtroom
It is certainly an odd coincidence that today (Valentine's Day), appeal proceedings commenced in the case against former asbestos executives in Turin. Thinking about the events which are likely to unfold in Turin over the coming weeks, led me to consider the meaning of love on this internationally recognised day for lovers. After some thinking and with the help of William Shakespeare, I have concluded that love which is true, love which does not alter with time or age, will be in the Turin…

Message of Solidarity from the International Ban Asbestos Secretariat on February 14, 2013
Dear Friends,
It was a year ago that we waited together in the Turin courthouse for the verdict. I remember the tension and the nervousness; all of us hopeful but wary of what was to come. When the verdict was announced, however, we felt great joy in realizing that after so many years and so much heartache, an astounding victory had been achieved.
And now a year later, the fight goes on as the asbestos criminals refuse to acknowledge their role in the asbestos slaughter which…

Eternit and the Great Asbestos Trial: Appeal Proceedings
Further hearings will commence on February 14, 2013 in the case which has become known as the “Great Asbestos Trial.” Hundreds of pages of legal argument submitted to the Turin Court challenge first degree guilty verdicts handed down one year ago by a three-judge panel to defendants Stephan Schmidheiny (Switzerland) and Baron Louis de Cartier (Belgium). Neither one of the former asbestos executives, both of whom were convicted for their part in the causation of an Italian asbestos disaster,…
