Spies in our midst!

The English language briefings uploaded to the Asbestos in the Dock website have proved immensely helpful to non-Italian speakers. I was particularly interested to read that Journalist Cristina Bruno was recently struck off the national register of journalists for unethical behaviour following revelations made about her activities as a paid informer for the public relations company hired by the Eternit Group.Bruno infiltrated AFEVA, the  Italian asbestos victims’ group representing Eternit's…See More

February 14: Valentine's Day in a Turin Courtroom

It is certainly an odd coincidence that today (Valentine's Day), appeal proceedings commenced in the case against former asbestos executives in Turin. Thinking about the events which are likely to unfold in Turin over the coming weeks, led me to consider the meaning of love on this internationally recognised day for lovers. After some thinking and with the help of William Shakespeare, I have concluded that love which is true, love which does not alter with time or age, will be in the Turin…See More

Message of Solidarity from the International Ban Asbestos Secretariat on February 14, 2013

Dear Friends,It was a year ago that we waited together in the Turin courthouse for the verdict. I remember the tension and the nervousness; all of us hopeful but wary of what was to come. When the verdict was announced, however, we felt great joy in realizing that after so many years and so much heartache, an astounding victory had been achieved. And now a year later, the fight goes on as the asbestos criminals refuse to acknowledge their role in the asbestos slaughter which has occurred. The…See More

Eternit and the Great Asbestos Trial: Appeal Proceedings

Further hearings will commence on February 14, 2013 in the case which has become known as the “Great Asbestos Trial.” Hundreds of pages of legal argument submitted to the Turin Court challenge first degree guilty verdicts handed down one year ago by a three-judge panel to defendants Stephan Schmidheiny (Switzerland) and Baron Louis de Cartier (Belgium). Neither one of the former asbestos executives, both of whom were convicted for their part in the causation of an Italian asbestos disaster, has…See More

Eternit and the Great Asbestos Trial

The English-language monograph entitled Asbestos & The Great Asbestos Trial has been translated into Thai and Japanese and will be launched at meetings in Bangkok and Tokyo this month (November 2012). The widespread interest in the iconic Italian trial of former asbestos industry executives continues to grow as people look for ways to hold asbestos profiteers to account for the crimes they have committed.See More

Schmidheiny Appeals Turin Verdict!

The landmark judgment handed down on February 13, 2012 by the Turin Criminal Court continues to reverberate in Italy and abroad. On July 16, 2012, it was reported that Schmidheiny’s legal team submitted a 500-page appeal which looks to overturn the verdict on grounds of constitutionality, jurisdiction and statute of limitations. Two weeks earlier,  Turin Public Prosecutor Raffaele Guariniello announced he was calling for the sentences to be increased from 16 to 20 years. Even as this case…See More

Prosecutor Appeals for Longer Setences for Eternit defendants!

On June 28 2012, the Turin Public Prosecutor who pioneered this case – Raffaele Guariniello – announced that hehad appealed the judgment. Considering the crimes committed, 16 years in jail was an insufficient punishment. Guariniello is calling for the sentences to be increased to 20 years for both defendants. The public prosecutor’s office, he added, is now  investigating the deaths of 117 Italians who worked in the Swiss and German Eternit plants and as well as the asbestos deaths of Italians…See More

Taking the Air

Posted on April 22, 2013 at 17:09 0 Comments

In my most recent Guest Blog for the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, I was able to highlight the public health catastrophe caused by the asbestos pollution generated by the operations at the Eternit asbestos-cement factory. "Taking the Air," contrasts the healthy British leisure activity of breathing in ozone-laden sea air with the harmful consequences of breathing the air in Casale Monferrato and other Italian towns blighted by Eternit.

The dire consequences of living in…

Eternit Documentary Shown in the United States

News received from the United States details the powerful impact of April 2013 screenings of the documentary: Dust: The Great Asbestos Trial at the Italian Film Festival in Minneapolis. Having seen this film on two occasions I am in no doubt about the high quality of the work and the importance of this documentary by Niccolo Bruna and Andrew Prandstaller. Copies of the book: Eternit and the Great Asbestos Trial which accompanied this film remains a very popular download from the IBAS…
